Remedial Reading: 7th and 8th Grade 2nd Hour Class

Please do not be alarmed by the name.  As Shakespeare cleverly said, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name, would smell as sweet." This class is something new that we are trying. It will take place during the 2nd hour study hall. I have selected certain 7th and 8th grade students to work with during this time to improve literacy skills. Some students were wondering about the selection process and it was quite simple: I was free second hour and a primary goal our school has this year is improving literacy skills. I selected a variety of Junior High students and will work with them during this hour.

Why? Because for years I have felt that study hall is wasting precious learning time. Every week students waste over four hours in a study hall that is not used for study. Even if the students are compliant with their behavior during study halls, most are not actively engaged in work. Study halls are designed to give students a chance to complete their homework and read if they have time, but it seems that many students do not use the time to its full potential. This is nothing new. Personally, I would like to see a change. It is for this reason that I decided to give up study hall and create a class that can help students become better readers and writers. This class is different than the 7th grade reading class where we spend a lot of time going over whole group readings and activities. This class will be focused on the students' individual needs and interests so while we will occasionally have whole class instruction (especially as we are starting out), much of the class will be spent in independent or small group study. Sometimes students will be able to work on their homework, but more often than not they will have supplemental work designed to help them grow as learners. At this time, I do not plan on assigning any homework for this class as it is designed to be a supplemental class.

9/10/2018- Last week we read a play about King Arthur. I really like the play and the way that the author relates the play and the themes to everyday life. Last week we focused on choices and how the choices we make impact others. Even the choice to do or not do homework impacts others. It was really a good discussion because we were able to get down to the heart of choices. Sometimes we don't even think about some of our actions or inactions as being choices, but they are. The students enjoyed reading and discussing the play. We will continue using the book a little this week as well.
